Are You Optimizing Your Small Business

Efficiency is important

If you’re running a small business, it’s the most important time to make sure your workflow is as efficient as possible. It’s the hardest time to stay ahead with your finances, and the least forgiving time if you fall behind. You need to make sure that every purchase you make will work out for the best, and you’re not being risky with large investments, else if the risk doesn’t pay off, your business can take a heavy hit. With everything you do, there’s always an effective method you can use to improve it, you just need to make sure you’re planning with your budget in mind.

Outsourcing

When it comes to spending as little money as possible, outsourcing is a great method you should look at when dealing with labour. A lot of the time when a business doesn’t need to hire people for a specific job, it can be much cheaper to look at third-party companies for their services. For example, if you need tech assistance or web development, you don’t want to go hiring a web designer as your employee, but instead, you’d look for someone else to fulfill your need. Check out small business best practices for some extra information. But if you’re looking to save money and time on your labour, then outsourcing is a great method to try out.

Social media

When it comes to self-promotion and image building, social media is a great place for you to look. Not only can you sign up for it for free, but you can gain easy and convenient exposure to large audiences. Many businesses have their own social media accounts, and it’s one of the easiest ways to keep in touch with your customers. With that in mind, it’s worth considering how visible your feedback will be, as customers will be able to post it on your page. This can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on the experience your customers have when they buy from you. For example; you don’t want customers to be posting negative reviews where everyone can see them. If the service they’ve received was satisfactory though, then the feedback on your page is a free promotion to your business.

Market research

It’s never been more important to keep up the trends. When you’re a small business, you need to make sure people have reason to come to you and see what you’re offering. Something to help you stand out from the bigger competitors, so if you can find an interesting and appealing niche, then you might have great success. If you don’t keep up with the times though, it can be very detrimental to you and your revenue. It’s not uncommon to see businesses fall behind and have to shut down when they no longer know how to appeal to customers, so make sure you’re in touch with your audience!

Running a small business is almost like a race, except you might just be racing the bills. If you’re financially insecure, then there’s no better time to start optimising your cash flow. Make sure you know how to monitor it, and predict where your money will come in and out so you can better plan for the future.

The Art of Balancing Running a Business and Studying

Just because you are currently studying, it doesn’t mean that you can’t run a business at the same time. In fact, this may be a beneficial and fulfilling way of paying for your course fees. However, getting the balance right in making sure that you don’t neglect either one of these separate priorities can be very challenging. This article is here to give you a bit of a helping hand in handling this difficult task.

Discipline Yourself

The first point may be an obvious one, but it is an important one to mention nevertheless: you need to have a great amount of self-discipline right from the outset. Plan your time as far in advance as possible, giving yourself periods to focus on your studies. Obviously, at crucial times such as exams, you will have less free time available with which to run your business. Succeeding in both business and study means prioritising and keeping on top of your responsibilities.

Understand Your Limits

For many student entrepreneurs, succeeding in their course remains the most important thing to them. Recognise that you can’t do everything at once. And if you hope to maintain your business, you may have to make sacrifices in the social aspects of your life. Once you complete your studies, this is likely to be your opportunity when you can dedicate more time to growing and developing your business.

Use the Facilities

If you are studying at a university, it is likely that it has a host of facilities for startup businesses. As well as the endless resources that you can find in the library, you will also have the opportunity to pick the brains of your tutors and professors to get more information. You may also consider joining a business society which gives you the opportunity to meet other budding entrepreneurs to swap ideas.

Think Carefully About Finances

Careful financial planning is important for all kinds of business, but this is especially the case if you are a student and you are likely to have limited startup capital anyway. Check out things like the best credit cards for students and make sure you are well-informed about all your financial options. Be careful about taking on debt as this can lead to a stressful situation which damages your studies.

Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

Even though no one starts a company intending to fail, you can learn a lot as a result of the mistakes that you make. You can always start again once you have finished your studies, but you will certainly avoid the pitfalls which you encountered in the first place. Of course, you should still treat your business with care and attention, but don’t let any negative experiences put you off in the future.

The art of balancing running a business and studying is never going to be an easy one to master, but these are just a few of the ways that you can make it that little bit easier.

How We Doubled Our Organic Sales

I’m just reviewing the end of year results and realised we had a large surge in organic traffic this year! In fact we DOUBLED our organic sales!

I think the biggest aim for most of my clients is to rely less on paid ads and to increase their organic traffic and sales. Although in my experience it has taken around 4 plus months to see a substantial increase, the results speak for themselves!

Might I mention that I only know the basics of SEO so anyone can achieve this through a few simple steps!

Client 1.

Client 2.

So I thought I would run through a few things we have incorporated into our marketing strategy this year that helped us to double our organic sales.

One of these was to increase our domain authority score.

What is a domain authority score?

According to MOZ, your Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages (SERPs). A Domain Authority score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

So for example, my site has a D.A of 19 and at the very top, we have Facebook with a D.A of 100.

So why does your D.A number matter?

Because your number predicts how well your website will perform in Google search engines. So in general, the higher the number, the higher the traffic a website receives and the higher it ranks above your competitors if your score is higher.

So what factors can increase your D.A?

Backlinks

The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.

Tip – Although backlinks can be purchased, it is also a risky and Google could penalize you. Try to spend one hour a week reaching out to potential influencers to see if you can create a blog post for their site linking back to yours. Once again, we are looking for websites with a high D.A number.

Creating Content

Content has a considerably positive impact on your D.A if it is LINKABLE. One of the most linkable content formats is Infographics. Highly shareable and appealing in design, we found that they were the most shared content in 2017. Images tend to receive up to 45% MORE interaction than a piece of content that doesn’t have an image. Infographics can easily be created for FREE using templates offered to us by Canva.

Tip – Try to find an influencer in your niche and see if they will allow you to create an infographic for them which can be linked back to your website.

Social Media Mentions

Yes, ensuring you have a popular social media site and you have plenty of engagement and views also accounted for a large chunk and this is what we have really focused on this year. Expanding our reach, getting our brands name out there and working with major influencers who in turn send traffic back to our social media profiles and then from there onto our Website.

Tip – Ensure you have a link back to your website on as many social platforms as possible. So Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Google Plus to name but a few.

SEO

No surprise here…. Moz has explained that we need to improve ALL aspects of S.E.O on our websites. This includes keywords, site structure, meta tags, word count and navigability. If this sounds rather excessive and a substantial amount of work, try downloading the WordPress plugin called Yoast.

Tip – Yoast reminds you to enter in your keywords, edits your past posts, gives you tips on how to improve your sentence structure AND if you need to add a link in or two and its FREE!

Directories

We also entered in our website into as many high ranking directories as possible thus creating good quality backlinks. So think along the lines of Thompson and the Yellow pages. You can also add your link to social media profiles such as Twitter, Facebook and Quora.

So above are just a few factors we really worked hard on this year that really reaped in the benefits for us. An interesting point to mention that we found even having one popular social media platform that brought in a large amount of traffic did not necessarily bring in the organic sales we wanted, it was more a combination of the above.

Tip – None really here! It’s pretty self-explanatory but it means putting at least an hour or two aside to do this.
