Exploring Mount Rigi – The Swiss Alps
Just a quick post! We have just returned from a long weekend in Zurich. Although Zurich is a beautiful city, we found ourselves leaving early every morning to explore as much of the swiss Alps as possible starting with Mount Rigi!
From Zurich station, we paid 109 Swiss francs to take a train to Auth Goldau which took 45 minutes on an amazing double decker train. This beats the London tube ANYDAY! I was surprised how little we could actually see as we neared the valley of Mt Rigi as there was a thick layer of mist everywhere.
We then transferred to the beautiful little cog wheel train only a 5 minute walk from the station. It was well sign posted. The cog wheel train took about 35 minutes to reach the mount and we passed multiple stations slowly on the way up as we headed above the thick layer of mist and the Alps spread out before us.
The views at the top were incredible! A panoramic view of lake Lucerne below and the snow capped peaks of the alps in the distance. I was expecting a BIT more snow in December, but none the less it was stunning with its green peaks below shrouded in a thick layer of eerie mist.
There is a large cafe and restaurant at the peak and we stopped by for a meal for 2 for 50 Swiss francs including soft drinks and dessert. I didn find Switzerland INCREDIBLY expensive though!
